Five days for the homeless is a campaign that will help strengthen the future generations of youth. I believe this experience will forever change my view on life and encourage me, and hopefully others, to continue to make a difference and help others that are in difficult situations.  I watched other participants take on this campaign for the last two years and I remember the feeling of reality; that homelessness is there, and  it can be happening to anyone you see and unfortunately it is something no one can be prepared for. I am doing this challenge to raise the awareness of the programs that are available to aid homeless youth and hopefully inform others that those in homeless situations are no different than them or myself.

Name: Allan Hall

Major: Bachelor of Management: Accounting

My name is Allan Hall and in all honesty, I’m a terribly uninteresting person. I am the current VP Admin for the University of Lethbridge Students’ Union and I’m in my last year of studies as an accounting student. I was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and I have been a resident of Lethbridge since I was 5 years old.

The main reason why I wanted to participate in 5 Days is because I sincerely want to help raise funds for Wood's Homes. For those of you that don’t know, Wood’s Homes is a charitable organization that has been providing programs and services for troubled children, youth and their families since 1914. They have done a lot of good work for the at-risk youths in our community and I respect the organization with the uttermost regard.

Name: Tim Coker

Year: 4th

Major: Bachelor of Arts and Science: Philosophy

Tim is a fourth year philosophy major at the University of Lethbridge. Over his university career Tim has been highly involved with the university residencies as a resident assistant and has been involved with many charity events, such as the MSS Headshave for Cancer, the John Gill memorial scholarship run, the underwear affair 2km run for cancer and last years 5 days for the homeless charity event.

Tim jumped on the opportunity to participate in 5 days once again this year. Last years event was an amazing experience and he looks forward to another great year and to raising money for Wood's Homes Youth Shelter. He hopes everyone donates and participates and that this year we are able to make and even larger donation to such a great cause.

Major: BA Addictions Counseling

I chose to participate in this experience because I felt that it was a worthwhile cause that much of society lacks a understanding of. Therefore I wish to bring greater awareness surrounding the issue as well as help to raise money for Woods Homes Emergency Youth Shelter. I think working from this aspect is a very influential way to promote change it causes individuals to have to face the growing problem.

It is difficult not to fall victim to the stresses and politics of university. We often feel overworked and we overpay. I however, understand how privileged I am to be given the opportunity to attend university. I hope by participating in 5days I lead by example and show others how truly fortunate we are. With the support of our family, friends, and the community we have been provided with an optimal environment to succeed. I view the homeless as a community populated by those who have fallen due to a lack of support (whether this support be financial, emotional, or medical). It is my belief that prevention is the best cure. If we can prevent dependency and support those who need it at a young age we can make a difference. All the donations provided will go to Woods Home’s, a local youth shelter who supports not only the children but their families. We are given the opportunity to help provide CHILDREN who have incredible obstacles to overcome a chance to succeed in life. With increased funding they will be able to provide the tools, support, and experiences needed to grow into productive members of society; just as you and I strive to be.
